E-Cig Drama: Explosions & Misuse

Separating Fact from Fiction: E-Cig ExplosionsE-Cig Explodes Causing Second Degree Burns! 16-year old’s e-cig explodes in his face! Another e-cig explosion!

This latest story, as reported by Yahoo! News, details the mishap that occurred when a vapor device exploded, causing severe second-degree burns on the face of a 16-year-old teen, from Alberta, Canada.

The latest headlines scream foul on the e-cigarette industry. “Those dangerous gadgets that teens are messing with.” “Marketed to children, now their lives are in danger.” “Researchers are uncovering the dark truth that lies ahead for teens that use these explosive devices”… Ah, why is there always such a lack of facts in regards to the e-cigarette/ vapor products industry instead of unbiased evidence-based reality?

However, if you are a thinking, intelligent human, you may be able to read between the lines of the exaggerated content here. No, I’m not saying this child’s (yes, he is a CHILD, a 16-year-old  minor) injuries are exaggerated; we wish Ty Greer the absolute quickest recovery from such a traumatic situation, which was most likely extremely scary and the last thing he expected as he was merrily vaping in his car prior to the incident. However, what he was doing with such a device is purely irresponsible on account of his parents/ guardians, as well as himself for messing with things he had no business messing with.

He was using a device known as a Wotofo Phantom, a device clearly designed for those who have a lot of experience in DIY vape building. Mech mods are not for beginners whatsoever. These devices, as anyone will tell you, as manufacturers will blatantly specify, and as retailers will make very clear to those trying to purchase them, are not for the inexperienced. These devices are very easy to use incorrectly, especially if e-cigarette batteries are not used correctly, or if the wrong type is used, and if chances are taken, explosions can happen. Another aspect to keep in mind is lithium ion battery temperature safety; it has to be a conscious thought of all e-cigarette/ vaporizer/ mech mod users. Ty Greer, unfortunately, learned the hard way.

Like firearms, fireworks, cars, knives, and prescription drugs, when used incorrectly, results can be dangerous and fatal. Blaming a product because a child misused it, is plain old ignorance on the part of the media, Greer’s parents, as well as anyone else who refuses to see that this situation most likely could have been prevented if proper care was taken.

Researcher of Anti-E-Cig Report Forced to Correct Her Findings

Scientist in False E-Cig Study Forced to Provide TruthLately there has been an great amount of news interest and media coverage on the vaping industry, and the majority of it has been based on vague “studies” conducted biasedly by scientists aiming to sway opinion against electronic cigarettes and other vaping products. Though these stories have often been refuted by other credible scientists who understand the controversy, those familiar with the circumstances can often see straight through these misguided, often ill-informed sources of “research.” Sometimes however, to our delight, the truth comes blazing out in the media and these bogus stories get countered in plain sight.

One such instance came recently when researcher Dr. Jessica Wang-Rodriguez was forced to go back on information she published that was blatantly false. Written for the medical journal, “Oral Oncology,” the study, in which she was the lead researcher, claimed that electronic cigarette products were responsible for damaging cells in such a way that could lead to cancer. In actuality, and even admittedly by those involved in the study, the dosages used in the study did not parallel actual doses known e-cigarette users are accustomed to receiving.

The problem lay in the fact that no actual e-cigarette usage was used to determine these findings, and after it was published, the e-cigarette industry blasted the false reporting. Once again, a researcher attempted to base an entire industry, comprised of thousands of different products, on the contents of two individual e-liquids. The claims of formaldehyde being contained in e-liquids, as well as diacetyl in e-liquids are unfounded because not all brands use these substances in their products; EverSmoke (among many other brands) for instance. That alone depicts inconclusive research!

Countless news outlets initially ran the story as factual, contributing to further misinforming of the population regarding vapor alternatives. Media outlets who commented on the misinformation contained in this study, and questioned the basis for these false reports invoked a recall from “Oral Oncology.” The redemption came when the head researcher, Dr. Jessica Wang-Rodriguez was forced to edit the published account to contain the reality of the circumstances of the study. Though she makes clear that she believes her findings are accurate, and that e-cigarettes are no better than traditional cigarettes, beliefs need to be kept out of science, and without a lack of factual evidence, they hold no proof. We are immensely grateful she was forced to clarify her findings with factual information, as it is so important for the public to be given accurate, fact-based information regarding products in this industry.

When Vapers Have Had Enough: Tacoma-Pierce Country Vapers Fighting Regulations

Vapers in Tacoma-Pierce WA. fight regulationsVapers in Tacoma-Pierce County, Washington have had enough with nonsensical, overbearing, unfair, discriminatory regulations. Instead of sitting back and taking the heat, they’re taking the county to court.

That’s right. A non-profit comprised of vapers, known as the Pink Lung Brigade filed a lawsuit last Monday in Tacoma-Pierce county on grounds that these new e-cigarette restrictions have no foundation based in science. From their perspective, these regulations, which have no serious evidence backing them, have the potential to force businesses to close. They are not requesting damages in the lawsuit, but they do want the judge to overturn these rules before small businesses have to shut down as a result.

Recently, Tacoma-Pierce County passed a string of restrictions that are not sitting well with the vaping community, who feel they are unfairly being targeted, and their business have the potential of suffering as a result.

“This new rule can be abused to force a retail shop into bankruptcy,” read the statement released by the nonprofit. It was signed by Marc Jarrett, one of the directors of the Pink Lung Brigade, who also happens to be one of the owners of Banzai Vapors, a nearby shop.

These new regulations will now prohibit vapers from using vapor devices in public places, places/ sites of work, and will even limit the extent to which people can sample the products and liquids in vapor shops. Owners of vapor shops now have to purchase designated licenses to operate their businesses. And, the most absurd of these regulations states that shop owners are going to be required to purchase elaborate ventilation systems, which can cost in excess of $80,000 just to own and operate.

Regarding the industry as a whole, we are proud to see businesses standing up for what they believe is right. As regulations begin to emerge throughout the country, it’s so important for the vaping community to make it known that being treated unfairly, without proper cause or reason will not be tolerated. We wish the Pink Lung Brigade all the best in their noble efforts for justice!

E-Cigarettes to be Regulated As Medicine in the UK

E-Cigs To Be Regulated as Medicine in UKIn a monumental move, the UK has announced that electronic cigarette devices and products will be regulated as medicinal products, soon to be regulated as cessation devices.

This groundbreaking news came yesterday, as the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) of the UK announced that electronic cigarettes will be considered medicinal products, enabling them to be recommended and suggested for use by general practitioners.

Previously, this was not allowed, because according to regulation that deemed particular language be used, due to their lack of studies and research, e-cigarettes could not be recommended by physicians for use. Now, the game has entirely changed.

This ruling has come on the heels of a groundbreaking report done by Public Health England several months ago, where it was determined that electronic cigarettes are 95% healthier and safer than traditional cigarettes, and they have the potential to save millions of lives. This independent research boldly proclaimed the great benefit electronic cigarettes have the potential of offering, and denounced the idea of regulations that would ban them.

While the US continues to shuffle its feet regarding the regulations of e-cigarettes in America, and the ridiculous amount of political wrangling that seems to be holding up the formation of common sense regulations to allow users to use these products as they wish, we cannot be more in awe and supportive of the UK for doing the right thing by their population.

Public Health England made it clear, that with 20% of the British population smoking, legitimate alternatives to tobacco are an absolute necessity, and e-cigarettes present an exceptional option. They are focusing on the benefit electronic cigarettes present as a method smokers can use to halt their usage of tobacco, and they see the potential in regards to the greater whole of their public health.

We are fully in support and have much admiration for these groundbreaking and monumental regulations that are surely going to positively impact the UK population.

What to Expect When Switching to E-Cigs

switch to vapor So, you’ve decided to make 2016 the year of all years to be done with traditional cigarettes once and for all. You’ve got that brand new, handy e-cigarette starter kit, some delicious cartridges in assorted flavors, and a whole lot of motivation on your side. Last pack of tobacco cigs has been smoked and the empty package is disposed. This is it – you’re ready to switch to e-cigs!

So, now what?

Well, it’s going to be different, and we’re here to tell you that you’re going to do great. It most likely will not be a quick snap of the fingers and your tenure with tobacco will be a thing of the past. Perhaps you will never again touch another traditional cigarette, however, expect to need some time to transition thoroughly.

One of the benefits to switching your method of smoking, (to vapor cigs) as opposed to outright quitting, is that you get the freedom of creating so much of the same experience. You still get to enjoy the feeling of actually smoking, being able to puff on the e-cigarette and feel the hit of vapor in your throat, and tasting it. You will still get that familiar feeling of nicotine, if you decide to use cartridges at a similar level of nicotine you are used to. It’s really quite similar, and it’s a process that can be tailored to your needs.

The first week is typically the hardest because the change will most likely hit you most dramatically. THe cravings for what you’re used to will probably hit. Your habit of lighting and smoking the cig will probably irk you. Your body will most likely yearn for the chemicals it no longer is being fed. This is all very normal. Stick with it though, it’s only a matter of time before this passes.

Having the ability to customize your vaping is another benefit you have when switching to e-cigs. There are so many options, you have the ability to go with more or less nicotine, choose your flavor, choose the style and size of your device, choose amongst a wide array of different devices, which accessories to incorporate into your usage; there are just so many ways to make vaping a part of your lifestyle, and tailor it into your way of life; unlike tobacco, which required you to adapt to its conformity. If 2016 is your year to get smoke free, stay on track; you’ll be so proud of yourself once you make it through!

Too Early For a Resolution? No Way!

Switch to Vaping Resolution 2016Hey, the year is almost done and gone; where did it go? We’re looking at less than two weeks now, and as much celebrating as there is to do in the coming 12 days, with parties, gatherings, and whatever kinds of merrymaking you’re going to be up to, 2016 is almost here and that means it’s almost resolution time!

Do you make resolutions? Are you of the “never, ever” sort or the “always, but forget about them by February” sort? It’s all good either way. However, if you’re serious about making the switch from tobacco to vapor, let 2016 be the year. Maybe you’ve tried making the switch before. Maybe you’ve run through all the usual suspects: cold turkey, nicotine patches, the gums, hypnosis, positive thinking, a divergent addiction to fill the void… and winded up right back where you started: a pack a day.

Don’t let distractions get in your way this year. We know how difficult it can be to make major changes, however, we also know very well the sweet, incomparable feeling of success that comes with overcoming each hurdle when it comes to switching to vaping. We know all about what it takes to go the distance when switching to vapor smoking, so definitely take a few minutes to check out our incredibly diverse, loaded-with-info Knowledge Center than can serve as an amazing resource anytime you’ve got a question or concern when it comes to vaping.

The best way to get into “switch” mode would be to make the commitment by purchasing a starter kit. Go after a basic one, don’t spend a fortune as you’re getting acquainted. Allow yourself to transition by using traditional cigarettes with your e-cigs. Experiment with flavors and techniques. Set goals, remind yourself with positive affirmations, and be gentle on yourself if it takes a while. Eventually, it’ll be second nature!

So, get ready for 2016! Let this be the year you switch for good, and make good on your promises to yourself! Here’s to the smokefree life! Cheers!

Diacetyl Linked to Popcorn Lung: The Reality

Diacetyl-Free Liquid Does Not Cause Popcorn LungAnother classic case of the media taking advantage of a hot-button issue and exploiting it beyond the necessary cause of reason, and attempting to twist the level of attention on a particular subject is exactly what has occurred in the e-cigarette industry this week. This is seriously not the way to report on something “newsworthy,” particularly when it involves serious matters that concern people’s health. Case in point: the most recent “study” to hit the presses from Harvard University, reporting on the dangers of diacetyl in e-liquids.

There are several problems here: the first of which is the fact that this study is based on findings that have been around for a while; it’s not breaking news. Secondly, there is a great amount of gray area in the study; 75% of e-liquids, according to the report, contain diacetyl. This is a flagrant misrepresentation, because there are literally hundreds of e-liquids out there, and testing just 51 flavors is a mere sampling; not at all a hard number that realistically encapsulates the market as a whole.

There is no denying the factual research that has found that diacetyl is linked to popcorn lung, also known as bronchiolitis obliterans. This has been reported about in regards to this industry for several years now, and even recently, Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos, (a major e-cigarette researcher and opponent of diacetyl) released information regarding a study his team in Greece performed in a quest to see how much diacetyl was being used in the market. His findings concluded that many European brands of e-liquids were still including the dangerous flavoring, though there are many, particularly USA-made brands who opt to carry diacetyl-free liquids instead, EverSmoke being among them.

It is so unfortunate that the media can so irresponsibly create a false panic, attempting to use scare tactics and erroneous information, masquerading as “scientific studies” to persuade the masses to avoid something. This is the basic reason why it is so important to be an educated consumer, and to research everything you put into your body. Don’t believe everything you hear, and always, always read between the lines.

Holiday Travel & E-Cigs

DOT Bans E-Cigarettes From Checked Bagged on Airplanes So the holiday season is fully upon us, and with that comes a massive amount of travel. And, just in time, the Department of Transportation recently announced that a new Federal rule has been passed, stating that airline passengers and crew members will no longer be able to pack electronic cigarettes, of any variation into their checked luggage. This includes standard electronic cigarettes, personal vaporizers, e-hookahs, dry herb vaporizers, mods, or any other variety of electronic nicotine delivery systems. So if you’re planning on hitting the skies for holiday travel, you best have an alternate plan for your gear!

This e-cigarette regulation comes as a precaution, as the Department of Transportation states there have been several occurrences of electronic cigarette items catching fire recently, and such fire hazards concerning air travel in checked luggage are an immense danger. Citing two dozen instances where e-cigarettes were related to fires or explosions, since 2009, including several occurring in checked luggage, they felt it was an imminent threat requiring action. This measure went into immediate effect in November.

It should be noted that this new rule does not ban e-cigarettes outright from being carried on aircraft, however. Passengers may continue to hold electronic cigarettes/ electronic nicotine delivery systems in their carry-on luggage or in their pockets, but they may not be used or charged during flights.

So what does this mean for holiday air travel and e-cigs? Easy: don’t pack your e-cigs into your checked luggage! We’ve suggested this for a long time due to not being able to have control over your luggage once it is checked, and if items are considered suspicious, you will not be able to stop airlines from tossing them. On the positive, this added safety measure comes with proper education and precaution; when it comes to airline safety, it’s always best to cover all bases. Safe travels, everyone!

Your Senses, and What Smoking Does to Them

How tobacco affects smell and tasteYour senses… they’re pretty remarkable. They shape your perspective, are home to your pleasure centers, and they are responsible for everything that involves delicious tastes, amazing aromas, and wondrous sounds. The thought of living without them, and having to navigate this crazy world without them sounds rather drab, does it not? Smoking is a great way to destroy them, and if you’re needing a good reason to shelf the smoke, here is a look at what smoke does to your senses, in particular, your senses of taste and smell. Because why compromise this amazing capacity we’ve been blessed with by nature?

Smell

Located in the rear of the nose are the olfactory nerves, and these transmit signals to the brain every time you inhale, allowing you to identify what you’re smelling. Traditional tobacco cigarettes dull these nerves over time, rendering them damaged, causing your ability to smell correctly and intensely to be hampered. In fact, according to the American Council on Science and Health, a frequent smoker is twice as likely to experience a reduced level of ability to smell correctly, than a nonsmoker.

Taste

The sense of smell is directly related to how one’s sense of taste works, however there are other ways taste is impacted by tobacco smoke. The sense of smell is affected by smoke in a physical manner, in which the tastebuds are actually flattened by the chemicals in smoke. In a study done in Greece where the tastebuds of smokers and nonsmokers were compared, and the tastebuds of smokers were found to be significantly flatter than those of the nonsmokers. The resulting effect causes one to not taste food as profoundly, with the sense of taste overall dulled to a drastic degree. What a shame!

The good part of all of this bad news is that smokers are able to regain their abilities to smell and taste correctly if they opt to switch to vapor cigarettes, which offer a similar experience without the chemicals and tobacco. Taste buds and olfactory nerves are actually known to regrow, as quickly as within a few days of quitting smoking (though individual results may vary, and can take up to a few months). The human body’s ability to evolve and heal is amazing, isn’t it?
