E-Smoking on the High Seas

The US Navy has embraced smokeless cigarettes and is now permitting their use onboard aircraft carriers

Gone are the days when those serving in the military were given cigarettes when they were overseas fighting wars (cigarettes used to be included in a soldier’s daily rations). Now due to rising health costs that stem from consuming tobacco products, there have been efforts to curb smoking in the military. Until recently, however, the military has not taken a stance one way or the other about smokeless cigarettes.

While the Air Force is including the devices in their no smoking policy, the U.S. Navy is beginning to allow sailors to use smokeless cigarettes onboard ships. Recently, the USS George Washington became one of the first aircraft carriers to permit sailors to vape on deck. Sailors have been offered a ‘smoke deck’ that is solely for e-smoking—they still are not permitted to vape anywhere they’d like.

Before making the decision to allow sailors to use smokeless cigarettes on board aircraft carriers, researchers made sure that there was enough demand and desire for an e-smoking deck before unveiling it.

Having a separate vaping deck will give sailors who enjoy e-smoking a social atmosphere with like-minded, vaping sailors. The creation of a designated e-smoking deck however does not mean that sailors would not be permitted to use their smokeless cigarettes on the traditional smoking deck.

When leaders decided to add an e-smoking deck to the USS George Washington, it was not their goal to promote or prohibit smoking; rather, they wanted to provide sailors with the tools they need to perform their work.

The changes made onboard the George Washington seem to be having a positive effect on those onboard. If these results continue, it is only logical that some of the Navy’s other aircraft carriers will begin providing separate vaping spaces for their sailors as well.

Electric Cigarettes Treated as Tobacco Product by CVS

CVS, one of America’s most popular drug stores, has quit selling tobacco one month prior to the anticipated October 1st date.  This halt of tobacco sales will result in a $2 billion dollar loss for the company ($1.5 billion loss in direct tobacco sales and $500,000 in related products).

CVS executives though are passionate about their decision and believe that the halting of tobacco product sales in addition to their services offered to help others quit will help more people kick the smoking habit.

Multiple electric cigarette companies were hoping the halting of tobacco sales would actually help the industry gain access into CVS.  There had been multiple conversations with CVS in hopes t this would occur.  However, the company has decided to also not sell any green cigarettes either and treat them as a tobacco product.

CVS spokesperson, Mike DeAngelis, told ABC News that “CVS Stores have never sold e-cigarettes and has no plans to sell them in the future.”

Gregory Conley, President of the American Vaping Association, says he is disappointed to hear of this as well, especially since there had been multiple conversations with CVS about the possibility of electric cigarettes being on the store’s shelves.  However, he says “Considering that CVS wants to rebrand itself it would completely make sense that they would want low risk alternatives to the product they just removed from the shelves.”

The President of CASAA (Consumer Advocates for Smoke Free Alternatives Association), Julie Woessner, says that she thinks it is a shame that CVS is not considering selling electric cigarettes as an alternative choice to traditional analog cigarettes.   She believes smoking is the problem, not the alternative methods such as electric cigarettes.

The debate continues as to whether or not green cigarettes should be treated as a tobacco product.  The FDA has already begun to regulate the industry from advertising and marketing that the e-cig product helps one quit smoking – only time will tell how much regulation will affect the electric cigarette industry.

CVS: Moving Towards a Smoke-Free Future

Along with their CVS “Minute Clinics,” they offer services that range from blood-pressure checks to administering vaccinations and flu shots, along with all traditional pharmacy services. While pharmacies are known for carrying products of all varieties, from personal care, to over the counter drugs, having a mini grocery selection, toys and stationary supplies, CVS’ focus has now shifted towards wellness, and carrying tobacco products, which are blatantly known to cause a variety of deadly diseases, does not fit with their healthful persona. Understanding the importance of maintaining an image of health, tobacco simply does not belong.

Such a drastic change in a major corporation shows where the tobacco industry is headed and where people are headed as well. How Advertising Catapulted the Cigarette Industry

LeadTobacco has a long history in the United States, and before they acquired their incredibly ill, irresponsible reputation, they were among the heaviest advertised products in the States. The Marlboro Man, Joe Camel; these guys were cigarette rock stars back in the day! However, cigarette ads go way back (more than 200 years!), to the earliest days of the US, in 1789, when P. Lorillard and Company ran a snuff and tobacco products ad in the New York daily paper.

This trend continued on for the next 150 years, and in 1868 the first large scale tobacco ad in the US appeared. It featured the cigarettes of Bull Durham and emphasized the ease and simplicity of “rolling your own” cigarettes.

By the late 1870’s, color lithography was unveiled and it changed the face of advertising. Color enabled better pictures, which meant better ads, overall communication. Color lithographs were used in cigarette packaging and on cigarette cards, which were part of the marketing strategy, which was rather elementary until the onset of WWII. This was the onset of a new era for cigarette use, and is very much when cigarette usage was solidly catapulted into the mainstream because they were included in the C-rations of American soldiers. During this time, many cigarette companies actually sent cigarettes to soldiers for free, resulting in a monumental effect of getting the soldiers completely addicted to tobacco, creating brand loyalty, and driving sales to all time highs. During this time period, marketing of cigarettes knew no boundaries; doctors as well as famous men and women endorsed them, and even children were used to help lure in customers in advertisements. This was the heyday of cigarettes as fashion statements.

In the 1950’s and ‘60’s, cigarette ads were all over television. Until the 1970’s, tobacco ads were totally legal, and you couldn’t turn on the TV set without cigarettes being sold to you, especially if you were young; a large majority of the marketing was geared towards the youth, with ads even being run during cartoons. They were an absolute study case of false advertising; prior to 1964, cigarette companies made all sorts of false claims of their cigarettes being safe from health risks. People were encouraged to “play safe with Philip Morris,” and were reassured of the safety of cigarettes because “more doctors smoke Camels”. The advertising was all about sales, and all about distorting the truth about their health effects, and keeping the truth from the public.

Things really began to change in 1970, when the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act was passed. This was the beginning of the end, and  the end for the advertising of cigarettes on television and radio occurred. As a result of this ban, cigarette advertising was restricted to printed materials such as magazines, newspapers and billboards. By 1999, the American public saw cigarette billboard advertisements get replaced with bold anti-smoking ads.

As time passed, cigarette advertising has seen even greater restrictions. 2010 saw the passing of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which has prevented tobacco companies from sponsoring music, sports, and other cultural events. The act goes so far as to prevent cigarette logos to appear on associated event products, logos, T-shirts, hats, and other forms of display. The crackdown has been aggressive, yet it has sparked major change.

Cigarette use is at an all-time low, and smokers continue to move beyond tobacco, embracing electronic cigarettes, which have proven to be an awesome alternative to their tobacco counterparts! It’s a guarantee that the industry will undergo many evolutions as time passes, however it is immensely interesting to see the changes that have occurred in the cigarette industry over time.
