E-Cigarettes Hitting the Mainstream

20130928_WBP001_0E-cigarettes have really become a mainstream occurrence as their popularity has exploded. In public places all over the country, on TV, in advertisements, in movies, their visibility has tremendously increased, and their reception is certainly prevalent as millions of people have accepted them as alternatives to traditional tobacco.

Countless celebrities are e-smoking, have been seen out and about using e-cigarettes, and certain electronic cigarette companies have even tapped celebs, such as Courtney Love and Jenny McCarthy for advertising. Stars have totally embraced the vapor cigarette as a trendy alternative to harmful tobacco, and many have been exceedingly proud to tout theirs around town. Reflecting on popular culture, it shows that not only are these products getting plenty of use in Hollywood, but people all over the world have replaced their tobacco cigarettes with them, and with exceptionally good results.

However, the popularity of electronic smoking goes far beyond the who’s-who of Hollywood. In a survey done by Wells Fargo Tobacco Talk in 2012, approximately 30,000 tobacco wholesalers, retailers and trade professionals believe that the hype around e-cigarettes is here to stay, and these alternatives are having a much greater impact than simply a current trend. As the numbers in sales have piled in, in 2013, electronic cigarettes have proven to be an industry raking in over $1 billion in sales, with more than 2.5 million users – which is not an easy feat for a fledgling industry! Suffice it to say, sales and usage of these products are expanding at a voracious rate.

As of 2011, 1 out of 5 tobacco smokers had at least tried an e-cigarette, and this figure is expected to be lower than actual 2013 numbers because many more smokers have switched to e-smoking since that time.

As expected though, with the popularity comes scrutiny, and this has led to immense discussion on whether e-cigarettes should be taxed the same as traditional cigarettes, and whether they should be regulated by government agencies. Currently, most regulation of e-cigarettes is done at the local and federal levels, and it allows for a great amount of leniency

As the industry expands in size and customers, it is expected that the FDA will begin to have more formal involvement. Expecting this, many e-cigarette companies have already begun measures to prepare themselves

As the popularity of e-cigarettes increases, right now is a great time to be an e-smoker or switching to tobacco. No matter where this industry is headed in terms of regulations, more and more people are turning to these electric alternatives and experiencing only positives.
