New York has just banned the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors, as of January 1st. One of the nation’s most determined states when it comes to keeping cigarettes and nicotine products out of the hands of the youth, New York is known for being pretty tough on smokers. This new legislation however, is a great thing for e-cigs. It gives them further credibility, and quiets down the critics who claim they are made to target teenagers.
E-cigarettes, unlike traditional cigarettes are not marketed towards children. They have been made for smokers, as an alternative. They are not made to lure in potential smokers, regardless of age, and definitely not those underage! They are designed to be similar to cigarettes so that smokers can get used them, and to keep them familiar. Since the inception of electronic cigs, since they hit the market, people have tried to claim that they are attempting to appeal to children and teens with their many flavors. EverSmoke, and any responsible e-cigarette companies have already had in place measures to keep those under the age of 18 from purchasing their products. If you analyze the vast majority of advertisements for e-cigarettes you will find that they do not use marketing tactics to entice young people. It is a niche market that appeals to adults who are current smokers!
While it has not been illegal until now for minors to purchase e-cigarettes in New York, it would be interesting to actually see figures on how many young people beneath the legal age are using them. I am sure it isn’t many. They are not exactly the “hot new thing” for young people; they are more likely to be used by these very same kids’ parents to help them get away from cigarettes! E-cigs are not a gateway sort of product; they are usually used by people looking to stop smoking! When it comes to technology, kids aren’t interested in things like alternative cigarettes… they are more inclined to go after high-tech gaming systems and iPhones. Less and less teens are smoking now than ever anyway, because tobacco doesn’t have the same cool factor as it once did. The new laws regarding e-cigarettes are a great thing; underage kids shouldn’t be using nicotine products, and this gives the electronic cigarette industry further fuel as legitimate cigarette alternatives!
