Is There Formaldehyde in Your E-Cigarette?

woman-smoking-electronic-cigarette-outdoor
Findings from a recent study conducted at Portland State University by David Peyton, a chemistry professor, contest that e-cigarette vapor may contain formaldehyde. Formaldehyde, as many know, is a known carcinogen and the main component in embalming fluid. It is also one of the known ingredients in traditional tobacco cigarettes.

In response to these formaldehyde claims, e-cigarette manufacturers fired back that the study was conducted poorly and that the measurements used were not produced using realistic conditions.

According to Gregory Conley, a representative from the American Vaping Association, Peyton and the others conducting the study did not talk to people who use e-cigarettes before conducting the study.

In an interview with NPR, Conley told listeners: “[The researchers] think, ‘Oh well. If we hit the button for so many seconds and that produces formaldehyde, then we have a new public health crisis to report’.”

Since formaldehyde is known to cause cancer, of course finding an e-cigarette—which is supposed to be better than tobacco cigarettes—producing formaldehyde would be discouraging news. However, conducting a study using inadequate research methods is not the correct way to show evidence.

According to Peyton, the hypothesis was tested by simulating vaping. This was done by “drawing the vapor…into a syringe, sort of simulating the lungs.” During this process, a sample of the aerosol contained formaldehyde. More than just finding evidence of formaldehyde, Peyton concludes that the amount formaldehyde found was much higher than that in tobacco cigarettes—as much as 5-15 times higher.

Critics point out that the study was performed as if a vaper had turned up the power of their e-cigarette to its highest setting, heating the e-liquid to levels that would be much too hot for use. While formaldehyde was reportedly discovered at higher than normal outputs levels, it was not detected at a normal usage level.

Conley conceded that no vaper would actually vape under such a condition because it would make their lungs uncomfortable.

What does this all mean? E-cigarettes are relatively new and still being studied. Therefore, we will be discovering things out about them for years to come. While it is important to take this research seriously, it would be a mistake to jump to false conclusions at every study’s results. We’ve got to remember to look at the bigger picture.

Electronic Cigarettes and the Environment

cigarettes-on-beach-sizedJust by switching to electronic cigarettes, smokers can do the environment a great service. Traditional cigarettes, by and large, are the single most polluted item on earth. Imagine, of all the trash that can be found in the global environment, the majority can be traced to a single source. That’s a lot of trash and a lot of cigarettes smoked. Whether smokers just choose to be ignorant when carelessly flicking their butts, or they assume that because they feel like paper they will easily biodegrade, cigarette butts are a nuisance anywhere they are discarded outside of a trash bin. Here’s a look at the ways e-cigarettes help the earth, because if there’s one place cigarette butts do not belong, it’s the environment.

-They are reusable. Having a reusable product means overall less gets consumed. You put a device into rotation, and you don’t produce much trash. And that includes trash that so often ends up not in a receptacle.

-Being reusable also means that there is a break in the endless cycle of traditional cigarettes and the constant stream of trash. A pack a day contributes 20 cigarette butts a day. Or 140 weekly, per person, whichever way they get discarded. It’s a ton of trash!

-E-Liquid bottles, made of plastic or glass, can easily be recycled. E-liquid is a very economic option for smokers, and it also has the benefit of being better on the environment than traditional cigarettes.

-E-cigarette cartridges last the equivalent of 20 cigarettes, and they are not so (thoughtlessly) easy to toss on the ground after use. When users change them, they are typically tossed in the trash due to their size and weight, unlike traditional cigarettes.

-Because they are less likely to be irresponsibly discarded, e-cigarettes and cartridges run less of a risk ending up a problem to wildlife. Unlike traditional cigarettes, which too often get consumed by birds and fish, e-cigarettes are less likely to get tossed into their environments and mistaken for food.

While the concept of perfectly “green” e-cigarette technology has yet to be developed, when it comes to smoking, electronic cigarettes are clearly the more responsible option. Traditional cigarettes are problematic on so many levels, and when you have the availability and option of vaping, with cleaner, more earth-friendly devices, there is no reason to use tobacco any longer!

The War on E-Cigs

7fe32cb6d9a2459c08c20a8f6c5f15adPropaganda, half truths, twisting of scientific studies, and misreporting are running heavily rampant these days when it comes to e-cigarette research and usage. With recent reports, such as the one published by the New England Journal of Medicine that went viral through the media a few weeks back, followed by the state of California’s public health department running a statement that e-cigarettes should not be used due to their production of “chemicals” and that they can be viewed as a gateway to smoking tobacco, it seems that there is an unusual amount of negative information swirling, based on speculation, aimed at discouraging users from vaping.

What these reports fail to do, all the while playing up hype and sensation, is focus on the positives electronic cigarettes have accomplished in a short amount of time.

Smokers don’t turn to electronic smoking to gain a new habit. They do not enter the world of smoking as a result, either. They look to these products as a means of transitioning away from traditional cigarettes, as with vaping they have more control, more options, and can enjoy the experience of smoking without involving any tobacco.

“It is stunning that a public agency entrusted with the health of the population of California would promote such a one-sided, scientifically impoverished document” remarked Sally Satel, who disbunked much of the speculation and false reports in a piece for Forbes. Also noteworthy, is that even the newly appointed Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy has stated that there is a “desperate need for clarity” when it comes to electronic cigarettes. Obviously a blatantly negative, harmful label cannot be placed on e-cigarettes, so the media really needs to halt their efforts in doing so!

So, what is the deal? Why is the anti-smoking coalition so drastically anti-e-cigarette? Is it because electronic cigarettes make the idea of stopping tobacco usage too easy? Too simple? Too enjoyable? Is it the concept of an alternative, similar yet different, too hard to grasp because there should not be a pleasurable option? Whatever the reasoning may be, it’s time for these “public health experts” to take a hard look at the reality of e-cigarettes, and see the benefits right before their eyes. Instead of focusing on the idea of e-cigarettes being a scary endeavor out to tempt young people into the world of smoking cigarettes, they should be compounding their efforts into lobbying for e-cigarette regulations that guarantee product quality and purity. As this industry is in its infancy, only the future will tell, however one thing we are certain of, is that electronic cigarettes are not going anywhere!

Do Electronic Cigarettes Make You Sick?

sick-woman-flu-woman-caught-cold-sneezing
As the world turns, so does all the controversy surrounding vapor smoking.  In a recent study, critics have claimed that electronic cigarettes weaken a persons’ immune system, making them more susceptible to contracting infections and viruses such as the flu and pneumonia.

Regrettably, animals were harmed in the making of this experiment…

According to the study, which was conducted by scientists at John Hopkins University in Maryland, mice were exposed twice a day to the amount of electronic cigarette vapor that a regular vapor smoker might inhale.

A handful of mice were then administered the influenza virus, while other mice were given the streptococcus pneumonia bacteria that causes sinusitis, pneumonia, and a variety of other illnesses. Supposedly, the mice that had been exposed to vapor were less able to fight off these diseases, and some of them even died.

The senior author of the study, Professor Shyam Biswal, commented that the results of the study show that “e cigarettes are not neutral in terms of the effects on the lungs.”  However, the team agreed that much more research needs to be done to confirm any negative side effects caused by electronic cigarette use by humans.

The Industry’s Response

Many in the vapor smoking industry believe that there hasn’t been enough evidence to refute that electronic cigarettes make an excellent alternative to traditional smoking.

At EverSmoke, we always aim to keep you abreast of new information and research regarding electronic cigarettes.  As usual, the controversy rages on. For now, we know that there still isn’t enough evidence to prove that vapor smoking is unsafe for humans.  What has been proven, however, is that traditional cigarette smoking is quite harmful and can cause a variety of cancers and respiratory illnesses.

For more information on how traditional smoking damages your body, check out the articles in our knowledge center.  Also, read about how smokers that have switched to electronic cigarettes have a much better sense of taste and smell.

Smoking and Oral Health: No Kissing Matter

tobacco and oral healthSmiles, eating, tasting, kissing, and talking: they are all reliant upon your mouth and your oral health. Poor oral health can contribute to all kinds of other bodily ailments, and having compromised oral health can certainly impede your ability to enjoy all the many things your mouth enables you to have. Imagine not being able to taste your favorite foods, or kiss your lover, or smile big and beautiful when the emotion takes you. Suffice it to say, you need your mouth, and you need it to be in good shape.

One of the best ways to disrupt the balance of health in your mouth is by smoking tobacco cigarettes. And yes, you’re probably fully aware that tobacco causes big trouble, but are you in the know of all the ways smoking is bad for your oral health?

If you smoke cigarettes, here is a breakdown of what you are playing with. While you may not have experienced any of these issues, just being a tobacco smoker puts you in contention for them! Want to steer clear? Drop the tobacco and switch to vaping; tobacco is not worth putting your mouth on!

Chronic Bad Breath

Smoking dries your mouth out, compounding the naturally found bacteria, enabling them to create a rather foul odor. Smoking also leaves behind disgusting particles, and they don’t smell good. Add in the fact that a vitamin C deficiency is a very common cause of bad breath, and nicotine has the known side effect of causing odors of the mouth. Smoking, very simply, and for a variety of reasons, can make your breath reek. No one wants to kiss a funky mouth.

Gums

Your gums are very susceptible to smoking damage. ‘White gums’ is among the most common issue, and this can be indicative of conditions as serious as oral cancer, gum recessions, and bone detachment.

Taste and Smell Loss

Loss of your sense of smell is one of the first things you lose when you start smoking. Next up is the loss of tasting, as the palate is closely connected to the sense of smell. Say bye-bye to your ability to taste deliciousness if you opt for tobacco. Interestingly, upon stopping their usage of tobacco products, users begin to realize how compromised their sense of taste has become!

Scary, right?! Makes you want to switch, ASAP, huh? Luckily, switching to vaping is super simple to do, and can offer a much more comfortable quality of life, without the tobacco exposure! Best place to start? An EverSmoke Starter Kit!

The Romance of EverSmoke: Nothin’ But Love!

add9a273Valentine’s Day is right around the corner (T-minus 2 days), so we thought it would be the perfect time to talk about how romantic vaping is. That’s right, vaping really is the sexier way to enjoy nicotine, and while traditional cigarettes may have been marketed as sexy and alluring in the past, those days have made way for the more enjoyable, more pleasing electronic alternative.

Vaping has become the cooler way to smoke in the past 5 years, and millions of people have switched to e-cigarettes as a result. In fact, at least 1 in 4 smokers have tried an e-cig! By obvious trends, it shows what an amazing effect they are having on people’s lives, and contributing to a more enjoyable way to enjoy a common pastime. And being so pleasurable, many of vaping’s positive benefits can be looked as sexy. So, in honor getting the love vibe on in honor of Valentine’s Day, here are a few ways being an e-smoker is super hot!

  • -No smoke equates to no smell. No longer smelling like smoke is awesome, because the foul odor of tobacco smoke is among the least attractive scents ever! “Tobacco smoke odor is a turn-on” said no one ever.
  • -Cleaner, more beautiful teeth, because a gorgeous smile is always sexy!
  • -Tobacco cigarettes harm the body tremendously, have a filthy stigma attached to them, and therefore being a smoker makes you seem dirty. Vaping is viewed as cleaner, more sanitary, and more people-friendly.
  • -A fresher home, because a clean, nice-smelling environment always sets a good ambiance for love.
  • -A smoker who constantly leaves their date to smoke gives off an attitude of indifference and being distracted. A vaper who stays and pays full attention to the person sitting opposite makes much better company; romantic or otherwise.
  • -E-cigs are just sexier devices. With a modern edge, and a techy-feel, they are intriguing.
  • -Vapor is simply sexy. The way it swirls through the air, the way it dissipates without a trace, the way it makes you feel… Tobacco smoking has seen its day, and vaping has totally become the better, hotter, more sexy way to smoke!

So this Valentine’s Day, enjoy the many pleasurable benefits that come as a result of vaping. If you and your partner share the lifestyle, even better! And if you are still looking to purchase an e-cigarette related gift for your special someone, a belated e-cigarette starter kit or couple’s starter kit will make the perfect, smoke-free Valentine’s Day gifts!

Study Finds Difference between Dependence on Tobacco Cigarettes Compared to E-cigarettes

definition-of-research

Recently discovered data has found that former smokers of traditional tobacco cigarettes feel “less addicted” to e-cigarettes after they make the switch. In essence, the cravings experienced by smokers-turned-vapers are not as strong, even if they are using their e-cigarettes as much as they used to light up they’re old smokes. In addition, the study showed that the participants who used e-cigarettes felt they were less inclined to smoke and less irritable when they couldn’t.

According to Jonathan Foulds, the lead researcher and professor at Penn State College of Medicine stated, “The pattern was really very clear. The score was significantly less for e-cig use than for tobacco use.”

The method for the study involved taking an online survey of over 3,600 e-cigarette users, looking for comparisons between the users’ previous use of tobacco cigarettes (including their dependence) and how dependent they feel as e-cigarette users.

The conclusion was that peoples’ smoking habits remained roughly the same: 24 cigarettes per day and 24 vaping sessions per day. In other words, although the amount of nicotine intake did not change, their dependence did.

Here were some other interesting findings from the study about the comparisons between e-cigarettes and smoking:

  • People didn’t need to vape as soon as they woke. They were able to withhold initial nicotine consumption for the day by an average of 20 minutes.

E-Cig Use in California: Let’s be Unbiased, Shall We?

California E-Cig RegulationsThe popularity of electronic cigarettes has grown exponentially lately, and as a result, there is more talk than ever in the media regarding them. News on their effectiveness, what’s in them, how they are used, and who is using them are constant headlines, fueled by last week’s major focus on them on the subject of formaldehyde, it seems like right now everyone is talking about e-cigs.

Following the New England Journal of Medicine piece, (a biased and erroneous article) stating that electronic cigarette produce more formaldehyde than traditional cigarettes, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a statement this week stating that all residents of California should abstain from using the products. Citing that formaldehyde, nicotine, and other toxins and chemicals are the foundation of this statement, they feel e-cigarettes are not a valid option to traditional smoking, and they are a public health risk.

Members of the electronic cigarette community are outraged, as it seems this is just another notch on the belt of California’s ongoing propaganda against smoking and electronic smoking. It is astounding that an entire state is willing to take a stand on the usage of a product millions have embraced, citing a lack of scientific evidence, without having any actual scientific evidence to back up their claims! It is immensely unfortunate that such a broad, biased statement could be implemented to the whole state of California’s residents, and not based on scientific research and factual information. Caution is understandable, but fear mongering and attempting to make “concerned” claims runs more along the lines of propaganda, and less about the actual, factual e-cigarette research.

Yes, they do highlight the fact that e-cigarettes contain nicotine, but what they do not focus on is that users have the option to have nicotine-free liquid, as well as the ability to choose the level they desire. Instead, the head of the CPDH, Ron Chapman, states the nicotine in e-cigarettes is as addictive as the nicotine in traditional cigarettes, and that is sufficient basis for users to abstain.

We are all for regulations that serve a purpose and make sense, such as in the case of age restrictions, and adults taking measures to keep their products out of the hands of minors, however on matters of public health, it is imperative to the public to be served accurate information. The future of vaping will surely be met many more times with cases such as this one, and as difficult as it is to face such harsh admonishing, we’ve come too far and made too much progress to back down.

Big Pharma Concerned About Electronic Cigarettes

woman-with-cigarette-and-electronic-cigarette

Here at EverSmoke, we don’t promote our electronic cigarettes as a way to help quit smoking.  Nevertheless, we are pleased when someone considers us as an alternative to traditional cigarettes. But not everyone is happy about this…

Recently, a story emerged about how big pharma is getting very concerned over the fact that so many people are using electronic smoking alternatives instead of the traditional patches and gum to cease the habit.

An article on a popular e-cigarette blog states that Andrew Witty, a GlaxoSmithKline Representative, recently mentioned that his company was considering another type of smoking alternative to compete with electronic cigarettes. At one point, the company discussed inventing their own version of an electronic cigarette, but the idea was tabled for now until they are able to see what the future holds.

“Even with an abundance of evidence to suggest that e-cigs are the best avenue for smokers that want to quit,” Witty says electronic smoking remains too controversial, so GlaxoSmithKline will continue to offer traditional smoking cessation alternatives such as nicotine patches and gum.

However, many electronic cigarette manufacturers paint an entirely different picture of big pharma’s involvement in the growing electronic smoking movement than Witty suggests.

According to some, the real foe of electronic cigarettes isn’t Big Tobacco, but Big Pharma itself. As the Washington Examiner reported:

“No industry spends more on lobbying in the U.S. than the drug industry, and drugmakers’ agendas are often bigger government. Big Pharma’s shadow hangs over the rule-making [of e-cigs].”

Again, we at EverSmoke don’t promote our products as a way to kick the habit, but we do welcome you to consider our electronic cigarettes as an alternative to traditional cigarettes.
