Scientific Research Suggests Smokeless Cigarettes Less Harmful than Conventional

young-woman-smoking-electronic-cigarette

With all the hoopla and controversy surrounding smokeless cigarettes, new scientific research is suggesting that they are likely to be much less harmful than the conventional cigarettes.  We know for a fact the statistics prove that conventional cigarettes can attribute to cancer, lung problems and overall general health issues.

Recently, an international team examined 81 studies where they focused on various issues surrounding smokeless cigarettes.  Some of the areas that were studied included:

  • Safety concerns
  • Amount and types of chemicals in the liquids and vapors
  • Use among both smokers and non-smokers

After reviewing much of the information, scientists agree that risks to passive bystanders and users are far less than the risks of conventional cigarettes.  However, they do caution that the risks for people with respiratory issues are unknown at this time.

They also concluded from the studies that there are fewer toxins in smokeless cigarettes than conventional.  Although, they contain some of the toxins from traditional cigarettes, it is at a much lower quantity.

Due to e-cigarette users breathing in vaporized liquid nicotine as opposed to tobacco smoke, scientists believe this is a healthier option.

They also conclude there is no concrete evidence suggesting teens and young adults who use smokeless cigarettes are likely to switch to traditional, and they conclude that the products do not encourage youth to begin conventional smoking habits.

Although, there is much research left to be done, this is good news for the e-cigarette smoker. There still remains much controversy as how to regulate smokeless cigarettes in the U.S. Many scientists conclude that based on their studies, smokeless cigarettes are indeed a healthier option.

How Advertising Catapulted the Cigarette Industry

LeadTobacco has a long history in the United States, and before they acquired their incredibly ill, irresponsible reputation, they were among the heaviest advertised products in the States. The Marlboro Man, Joe Camel; these guys were cigarette rock stars back in the day! However, cigarette ads go way back (more than 200 years!), to the earliest days of the US, in 1789, when P. Lorillard and Company ran a snuff and tobacco products ad in the New York daily paper.

This trend continued on for the next 150 years, and in 1868 the first large scale tobacco ad in the US appeared. It featured the cigarettes of Bull Durham and emphasized the ease and simplicity of “rolling your own” cigarettes.

By the late 1870’s, color lithography was unveiled and it changed the face of advertising. Color enabled better pictures, which meant better ads, overall communication. Color lithographs were used in cigarette packaging and on cigarette cards, which were part of the marketing strategy, which was rather elementary until the onset of WWII. This was the onset of a new era for cigarette use, and is very much when cigarette usage was solidly catapulted into the mainstream because they were included in the C-rations of American soldiers. During this time, many cigarette companies actually sent cigarettes to soldiers for free, resulting in a monumental effect of getting the soldiers completely addicted to tobacco, creating brand loyalty, and driving sales to all time highs. During this time period, marketing of cigarettes knew no boundaries; doctors as well as famous men and women endorsed them, and even children were used to help lure in customers in advertisements. This was the heyday of cigarettes as fashion statements.

In the 1950’s and ‘60’s, cigarette ads were all over television. Until the 1970’s, tobacco ads were totally legal, and you couldn’t turn on the TV set without cigarettes being sold to you, especially if you were young; a large majority of the marketing was geared towards the youth, with ads even being run during cartoons. They were an absolute study case of false advertising; prior to 1964, cigarette companies made all sorts of false claims of their cigarettes being safe from health risks. People were encouraged to “play safe with Philip Morris,” and were reassured of the safety of cigarettes because “more doctors smoke Camels”. The advertising was all about sales, and all about distorting the truth about their health effects, and keeping the truth from the public.

Things really began to change in 1970, when the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act was passed. This was the beginning of the end, and  the end for the advertising of cigarettes on television and radio occurred. As a result of this ban, cigarette advertising was restricted to printed materials such as magazines, newspapers and billboards. By 1999, the American public saw cigarette billboard advertisements get replaced with bold anti-smoking ads.

As time passed, cigarette advertising has seen even greater restrictions. 2010 saw the passing of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which has prevented tobacco companies from sponsoring music, sports, and other cultural events. The act goes so far as to prevent cigarette logos to appear on associated event products, logos, T-shirts, hats, and other forms of display. The crackdown has been aggressive, yet it has sparked major change.

Cigarette use is at an all-time low, and smokers continue to move beyond tobacco, embracing electronic cigarettes, which have proven to be an awesome alternative to their tobacco counterparts! It’s a guarantee that the industry will undergo many evolutions as time passes, however it is immensely interesting to see the changes that have occurred in the cigarette industry over time. One thing is for sure: the era of the e-cigarette is here!

Cigarette Advertising: Marlboro Man

Marlboro

From 1954 through 1999, Philip Morris & Co. used a cowboy coined “The Marlboro Man” as their spokesman in  advertising campaign. This campaign originated in part to try to popularize filtered cigarettes amongst men, as they were first considered a feminine product when they came out in the 1940s and 50s.

In fact, from 1924 until 1954, Marlboro was marketed as a woman’s cigarette using the slogan “Mild as May”; however, within a matter of months, the brand was given a masculine makeover.

During this span of time, most cigarette companies tried to falsely market filtered cigarettes as a safer alternative by using complex terminology and scientific claims. Philip Morris & Co., however, took a different method and the Marlboro man was born.

When the campaign was proposed, the company planned to use a variety of “manly” figures, including sea captains, weightlifters, war correspondents, construction workers, etc.  The cowboy was the first in the new advertising and marketing campaign.

Within a year, Marlboro’s market share rose from less than one percent to becoming the fourth best-selling brand. This led Philip Morris to drop the other manly figures and stick with the cowboy alone.

The Marlboro man campaign depicts a rugged, masculine cowboy figure (usually shown riding a horse through a barren landscape) with nothing but his cigarette. The actor who popularized the cowboy image in the mid-fifties was Paul Birch—he was featured in 3 page magazine ads and TV ads.

In the early 1960s, Marlboro reinvented their ad campaign again. They replaced the actors and began using real working cowboys, rodeo riders or stuntmen. One such cowboy was Carl “Big-un” Bradley from Guthrie, Texas. By 1972, the popularity of the Marlboro man campaign was so popular that Marlboro cigarettes captured the top of the tobacco industry.

The popularity of the Marlboro Man peaked during the 1960s and 1970s. However, the increasing evidence linking cigarette smoking to disease led to a decline in smoking and changed the way cigarettes were be advertised. At least three of the men who portrayed the Marlboro man have died of smoking related illnesses—lung cancer and COPD specifically.

E-Cig Atomizers: What you Need to Know

EVERSMOKE8If you’re interested in learning more about atomizers, what they do, and what they bring to the vaping experience, keep reading! Knowing about how atomizers function can have a direct effect on the functioning of your device, enable you to have a great vapor, awesome flavor and the best possible performance.

What exactly is an atomizer?

Atomizers are the heating mechanism within the electronic cigarette. They literally vaporize the liquid nicotine into the hits that are so enjoyable. In e-cigarettes that work with disposable cartridges, the atomizer is contained inside of the cartridge.

Are they safe?

By all means, yes! They are kept completely out of the way by being housed inside of the cartridge, and will not come into contact with you. At EverSmoke, we are all about the safety of our products and ensuring our customers are always safe when using our products. One of the safety features of our batteries is a 10-second shut off which ensures that overheating will not occur.

How long can I expect an atomizer to last?

2-4 weeks is typical, however it depends on how often you are changing your cartridge. Every cartridge contains a new e-cigarette atomizer, so every time you replace a cartridge, you get a new one. Whether it’s biweekly, weekly, daily, or monthly.

Should I clean my atomizer?

If you are using a device that has replaceable atomizers, it is a wise decision to do so. However, EverSmoke e-cigarettes work with disposable cartridges, which means the atomizers are also disposable, and they will most likely be tossed before you would need to clean it.

One of the most important components to e-cigarettes are atomizers. Along with the battery, microchip, and e-liquid, they play a vital role in creating the amazing experience that is vaping.

E-Cig Lingo: What is “Throat Hit?”

vapetravelIf you spend any time reading up on vaping, interacting with the electronic cigarette community, be it online or in real life, you’ve probably come across a variety of culture-specific terms and phrases that may or may not make sense to you.

One of these terms is “throat hit.” If you’ve spent your time smoking cigarettes, you probably have never put much thought into what this means, much less had to question your cigarette producing an adequate one.

You see, tobacco smoke, because it is actually burning tobacco, will produce a heavy, full hit every time. When recreating this electronically, and without the tobacco, it takes a certain degree of technology and fine tuning within the engineering to replicate it with vapor. Obviously it can be done, and not all e-cigarette brands get it right.

The throat hit is one of the reasons why e-cigarettes have worked out so well for smokers who want something other than a traditional cigarette to obtain their nicotine from. Gums and patches are available, and obviously with nicotine, however the one element they lack is the ability to provide a throat hit like a traditional cigarette. It is what makes e-smoking so similar and comfortable for smokers.

“Throat hit” is basically the hit from the smoking device, whether it’s an electronic cigarette/ vaporizer or a traditional tobacco cigarette. It’s what you feel upon inhalation. It is the feeling of the vapor, warm and smooth, yet powerful, hitting the back of your throat. It is part of the overall experience, and the sensation is extremely pleasurable for those who are accustomed to smoking. So pleasurable in fact that e-smokers typically want devices that produce a good one.

Throat hit is impacted by the e-cigarette battery’s output, the nicotine in the cartridge, and the flavor. Finding an e-cig battery that produces the kind of throat hit you want can sometimes be tricky, but opting for a high-quality brand is a great place to start. An additional option are mods because Advanced Personal Vaporizers have the ability to be tweaked in ways that allow you to change the power of the throat hit.

The throat hit is one of those intrinsic parts of vaping that matter a whole lot. A lot of emphasis is placed upon battery power, great flavors, nicotine strength, and great accessories, however at the core of the experience, throat hit can make or break it! Choose your e-cigarette wisely; satisfaction is key!

Questions to Ask Before Choosing an E-Cig

5-Movie-Geek-Questions-2012Before you invest in, and choose an  e-cigarette starter kit, consider the brand and its products. Here are some things to consider when choosing a particular product.

How powerful and long lasting is the battery?

The battery is the main part of an e-cigarette, and there are some things to think about before choosing one. Those of the lithium-ion variety are known and loved for their long life and ability to perform well, plus last a while. They charge quickly and offer a solid experience.

How does the e-cigarette work?

There are so many types of e-cigarettes, and obviously they all do the same thing when it’s all said and done. For example, some types require you to fill liquids yourself and others use pre-filled cartridges. Some are 2-piece units, some have a variety of different parts that can changed. You should research the different offerings before choosing, and find a brand known for it’s quality products.

How versatile are the accessories?

Accessories are a vital part of using e-cigarettes, and they make life wonderful. Choose a starter kit that comes with the accessories you want, such as different chargers, perhaps a carrying case, maybe a Personal Charging Case.

What are the cartridge flavor options?

Flavor is a huge part of the enjoyment of electronic cigarettes, and you definitely want to be able to enjoy what you use. Try different cartridges, and go after a brand with a decent selection to avoid limited options. You may get bored with even a single favorite flavor, so being able to try new ones and having a few that you like on rotation is great.

What is the cost; both in the short-term for the kit, and the long run for the cartridges and additional accessories?

This is a big thing to consider and very much a personal decision, but typically the cost of electronic cigarettes is much less than traditional. Brands all vary in price. Sometimes you have to pay more for good quality, but that will usually lead to more savings in the long term because you won’t be chucking out money all the time.

What are the policies in terms of warranties, money back, and refunds?

Protect yourself when making purchases; not all companies genuinely take care of their customers. EverSmoke does, however. With a 30-day money back guarantee and lifetime warranties available through their Home Delivery Program, when you purchase e-cigarettes from them, you can be sure you are dealing with a great brand.

What about customer service; how does this company value customers?

We’re talking about a long term relationship here, so you don’t want to give your money to a brand that doesn’t value you. Make sure the brand you choose has a variety of ways you can contact them, and that they treat their customers well. Social media can be a great inclination as to how well their customers are satisfied and how likely the company communicates with them.

In essence, you will be investing in the e-cigarette company you choose and should it be for the long-term, you will want a satisfying experience throughout the duration. Choose wisely, consider your options, and go for a brand that has your best interests in mind!

Responsible E-Cig Disposal: Help Us Keep E-Smoking Green, People!

recycling-sign

E-smoking is clearly becoming more and more mainstream. This is not only evident by the amount of media coverage green cigarettes receive and the number of vapor clouds you can spot while walking around town, but perhaps also by the amount of e-cig litter found on the ground.

A recent news story says that as the e-cig industry evolves and expands, the evidence for this growth is witnessed by the increasing amount of litter making it onto our city streets, sidewalks and public parks. And while the only source the article cites references cigarette butt litter (so who knows if their claim about e-cigs is accurate or not), nevertheless it provides us with great opportunity to talk about the important—yet often neglected—topic of proper e-cig disposal.

One of the great things about green cigarettes is their reusability. The simple fact that e-cigs can recharged over and over again drastically cuts back on waste production compared to traditional smoking, where a few puffs is all you get out of a cigarette. Even disposable e-cigs, which allow people to try e-smoking before they invest in a reusable device, is good for about 500 puffs—much longer than your average cigarette.

Proper E-Cig Disposal & Recycling

While there’s no doubt that e-cigs are a “greener” alternative to traditional cigarettes, it is up to each individual to do their part in minimizing their impact on the environment. One way e-smokers can do this is by making sure they dispose of their e-cig properly and responsibly.

The battery that powers your e-cig should be treated as electronic waste and discarded accordingly. Check with your city regarding its guidelines for electronic waste disposal, or contact a nearby Best Buy and find out if they do e-waste recycling at that particular store.

As far as the rest of the device, Dr. Ranee Kaur Banerjee of Brighthub recommends disposing of your e-cig by following these steps:

  1. Carefully remove the filler material out of the cartridge.
  2. Wash it in running water to rinse of nicotine residue.
  3. Wrap filler in biodegradable material before throwing it in the trash.
  4. Rinse cartridge under running water.
  5. Cap it with the original plug.
  6. Dispose of it as you would any other plastic waste.

Following these steps will help ensure that nicotine won’t contaminate our water sources and is discarded safely.

Study: E-Cigarette Benefits Outweigh Negatives

e-cigarette-studies-woman-in-lab-coatAs the international debate continues regarding how electronic cigarettes should be regulated, and what types of restrictions should be considered towards them, a study partially funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and published in the journal Addiction on July 30 advocates for less restrictions and a more open look at the benefits these products offer.

This study that was recently done by the Center for the Study of Tobacco Products at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, and published by U.S. News has concluded that based on their evidence, strict regulations of electronic cigarettes are not warranted.

In addition to their own research, and reviewing 81 studies done prior, the team of researchers has stated that electronic cigarettes, when compared to traditional cigarettes, have the possibility of reducing tobacco-related illnesses and death. As these products are alternatives to traditional cigarettes, and they do not contain any tobacco, the study has concluded that the benefits to smokers  outnumber the potential harm. While long term effects remain unknown, as electronic cigarettes have been in use just over a decade internationally, no studies thus far, nor evidence have shown that the vapor produced from e-cigarettes is harmful to either the user or bystanders.

“Current evidence suggests that there is a potential for smokers to reduce their health risks if electronic cigarettes are used in place of tobacco cigarettes,” said researcher Thomas Eissenberg, who is the co-director of the Center for the Study of Tobacco Products, which was responsible for this study.

While electronic cigarette regulations that require users and purchasers to be legally adults are obviously for the better, restrictions that group e-cigarettes into the same category as tobacco, and call for even tighter restrictions do not make sense. Smokers who turn to vapor smoking are doing so in an effort to find an alternative; not a new method of smoking tobacco.

Only time will tell where the fate of electronic cigarette restrictions end up, however in the meantime, it is most definitely a shift in the right direction that a vast majority of e-cigarette research is offering a positive view on this controversial topic. For more information regarding electronic cigarette studies and restrictions, have a look at the different articles on the subject in our learning center.

E-Cigs VS Vaporizers

9107969_origStandard electronic cigarettes and vaporizers are two totally different animals, yet they do basically the same thing in different ways. They both have their benefits, and their own individual styles, giving users the ability to choose what works for them. For those new to e-smoking, it may be confusing to decipher between the two.

Read on to learn about the differences between them, what their benefits are, and to see which will fit your personal needs of vaping.

E-Cig Pros

  • They look like traditional cigarettes, which is great if you don’t want to be attracting a lot of attention.
  • Small, compact size makes them convenient and very easy to store.
  • Ultimate style for portability; you can take them anywhere covertly and easily.
  • Easy to use; e-cigs have been designed to be as similar to traditional cigs as possible.

  • Very affordable; starter kits can be inexpensive and the average vaper saves thousands of dollars each year.
  • Wide variety of accessories including chargers, battery sizes and colors, storage cases, and lanyards.

Personal Vaporizer Pros:

  • Hi-tech style and design makes them both esthetically as well as functionally pleasing.
  • Vaporizers often have more control features, allowing the user to customize exactly how it performs when it comes to the vapor and the power.
  • Advanced engineering enables them to produce larger quantities of vapor.
  • The same engineering allows for more powerful throat hits than basic e-cigs.
  • Typically vaporizers work with tanks and refillable e-liquids instead of cartridges, which enables the user to have much more control over the vapor.
  • When using e-liquids, users typically have a much greater range of flavor choices at their disposal.
  • A huge selection of accessories gives users endless amounts of options for creating their ideal device.

As you can see, both styles of vaping devices offer many pros, which basically come down to preference.
