Vaping Bans Backfire Causing Teen Smoking to Rise

Smoking_woman_Kelsey

Do government policies intended to promote public health sometimes backfire, causing the opposite effect?  You betcha.  Case in point: The U.S. government is continuing to enforce bans against teens purchasing vaping products before a certain age, despite scientific research indicating that these policies are having a negative effect.

Yale University’s Abigail Friedman has been reviewing a new study, accepted by the Journal of Health Economics, in which, Friedman believes, the numbers show that teen smoking rates climb when society bans them from buying vaping products.

“Bans on e-cigarette sales to minors yield a statistically significant 0.9 point increase in the smoking rate among 12 to 17 year olds,” Friedman explained to ChurnMag.com. “That’s enough of an increase to undo all the progress we’ve made as a society to reduce the number of teenage smokers. By trying to protect our kids, we’ve inadvertently put them at a greater risk.”

Even if this information withstands further investigation, it’s unlikely that any city will discontinue the bans regrettably.  Friedman suggests that the age be lowered to sixteen for minors to be allowed to purchase vaping products.  She believes that older teens who are more likely to smoke may at least choose a vaping product rather than traditional analog cigarettes if given the opportunity.

Another suggestion has been to educate the younger generation differently in regards to smoking.  Currently, the anti-smoking groups suggest that all smoking is harmful.  However, some believe we should educate them truthfully that vaping is a smarter alternative to cigarettes due to the fact that vaping eliminates tobacco, tar and combustion.

Whatever comes of this study or any future information, EverSmoke is a believer freedom when it comes vaping.  That’s why we offer a wide selection of custom e-cigarettes, pre-filled flavor cartridges and rad vaping accessories.  If you’re considering an alternative to smoking, check out our main site or contact us to see what we have to offer.

Electronic Cigarettes Banned from Checked Airline Luggage

Self_check-in_at_Dublin_Airport

A new regulation from the U.S. Department of Transportation has recently been implemented, effectively banning e-cigarettes from checked baggage.  According to the recent federal rule, sadly neither passengers nor crew members are allowed to pack electronic cigarettes or other battery operated smoking devices in their checked luggage at the airport.

Individuals are allowed to pack them in carry-on luggage, but they are not permitted to use or recharge the electronic device while on the plane.  (Read our article on traveling with your e-cigarette for more information.)

According to a statement made by Transportation Secretary, Anthony Foxx: “We know from recent incidents that e-cigarettes in checked bags can catch fire during transport.  Fire hazards in flight are particularly dangerous. Banning e-cigarettes from checked bags is a prudent safety measure.”

The DOT states there have been 26 reported incidents since 2009 in which e-cigarettes have been responsible for explosions or fires.  Some of these occurred due to short circuits, but often it was user error.  Several of the devices had been left on and consequently caught fire in the luggage area due to an overheated packed e-cig.

Two of the most recent incidents that were reported included an issue at Boston’s Logan Airport on August 9, 2014 where an electronic cigarette device was placed in a passenger’s checked bag in the cargo hold of the plane and a fire broke out, causing the forced evacuation of the aircraft.  Also, on January 4, 2015 at the Los Angeles International Airport, a late arrived checked bag missed its connecting flight and caught fire when the e-cigarette inside the bag overheated.

As electronic cigarette users, we must all remember to handle our devices with care and use them responsibly.  Fortunately, cases of e-cigarettes catching fire are few and far between, as we discuss more in-depth in this article.

Your Senses, and What Smoking Does to Them

How tobacco affects smell and tasteYour senses… they’re pretty remarkable. They shape your perspective, are home to your pleasure centers, and they are responsible for everything that involves delicious tastes, amazing aromas, and wondrous sounds. The thought of living without them, and having to navigate this crazy world without them sounds rather drab, does it not? Smoking is a great way to destroy them, and if you’re needing a good reason to shelf the smoke, here is a look at what smoke does to your senses, in particular, your senses of taste and smell. Because why compromise this amazing capacity we’ve been blessed with by nature?

Smell

Located in the rear of the nose are the olfactory nerves, and these transmit signals to the brain every time you inhale, allowing you to identify what you’re smelling. Traditional tobacco cigarettes dull these nerves over time, rendering them damaged, causing your ability to smell correctly and intensely to be hampered. In fact, according to the American Council on Science and Health, a frequent smoker is twice as likely to experience a reduced level of ability to smell correctly, than a nonsmoker.

Taste

The sense of smell is directly related to how one’s sense of taste works, however there are other ways taste is impacted by tobacco smoke. The sense of smell is affected by smoke in a physical manner, in which the tastebuds are actually flattened by the chemicals in smoke. In a study done in Greece where the tastebuds of smokers and nonsmokers were compared, and the tastebuds of smokers were found to be significantly flatter than those of the nonsmokers. The resulting effect causes one to not taste food as profoundly, with the sense of taste overall dulled to a drastic degree. What a shame!

The good part of all of this bad news is that smokers are able to regain their abilities to smell and taste correctly if they opt to switch to vapor cigarettes, which offer a similar experience without the chemicals and tobacco. Taste buds and olfactory nerves are actually known to regrow, as quickly as within a few days of quitting smoking (though individual results may vary, and can take up to a few months). The human body’s ability to evolve and heal is amazing, isn’t it?

Lawsuit Filed Over Deceptive “Organic” E-Liquid Mislabeling

organic

One of the biggest issues that e-cigarettes are currently facing is over their non-regulated status. Because of this non-regulated status, e-liquid makers are able to put whatever they want on the labels for their product – and unfortunately this can include deceptive marketing techniques. This is one reason that Attorney General Bob Ferguson is trying to make e-cigarettes (and e-liquid specifically) more regulated.

In order to battle this type of false labeling, Ferguson has recently filed suit against a California-based e-liquid company. In the suit, from the King County Superior Court, Ferguson claims that the company has a past of placing “unsubstantiated health claims” on their e-liquid bottles, including stating the product is organic without certification.

Additionally, Ferguson cited two other companies for claiming organic e-liquids without certification.

The first company claims that their e-liquids are 100% organic, which could lead consumers to assume that there is no way the product is harmless. The issue is that product research has shown that not all of the components within the e-liquids are organic.

In addition, the e-liquid manufacturer hasn’t secured a certification of organic product, which is required under Washington’s law on organic products.

Of the other two e-liquid manufacturers Ferguson is suing, neither secured an organic certification from their home state. In one case, the products were found to contain less than 70% organic components, violating Washington’s organic laws which state that products with less than 70% organic components cannot be labeled as such.

All three companies were in violation of the Consumer Protection Act. Since the suit, two of the three e-liquid manufacturers have modified their labels to fix their organic status.

While we don’t claim that our e-liquid is organic, here at EverSmoke we strive to provide the highest quality pre-filled e-liquid cartridges for a superior vaping experience. CDC Clarifies Common E-Cig Myth: Nonsmokers Are Not Interested

CDC Data The Centers for Disease Control (the CDC) recently reported that e-cigarettes pose way less of a threat than critics have been portraying them as, even as the popularity of electronic cigarettes grows. And, to stick it to the nonsensical rumor that electronic cigarettes are a danger to society because they are going to encourage a new wave of nonsmokers converting to the tobacco-smoke-filled dark side, the data cited by the CDC turns this misguided theory on its side.

The CDC has based their status on the findings of a new study from the National Health Interview Study, which has provided the latest, most conclusive statistics on the habits of smokers and recently quit nonsmokers.

Stats From the Study

In the study, it was determined that 12.6% of American adults had, at least at one time, tried an e-cigarette. It also concluded that 3.7% of American adults currently use electronic cigarette devices regularly, which means that at a minimum they use them some days. Among the other interesting findings from the study, 47% of current smokers, and 55% of former smokers who had recently quit smoking have tried an electronic cigarette or other vapor device item at least once. 15.9% of tobacco smokers and 22% of recently quit former smokers are using electronic cigarettes on a somewhat regular basis. Also of note, tobacco users who are currently smoking  who had, within the last year, attempted to quit cigarette smoking were much more likely to employ electronic cigarettes as a method than smokers who made no effort to quit smoking.

As these findings from the study show, electronic cigarettes are being used by people who want to stop smoking tobacco, and are favoring their options in having alternatives, rather than nonsmokers who are getting lured into smoking by these attractive, trendy devices. The study also found that less than o.4% of nonsmokers have actually been introduced to smoking as a result of e-cigarettes, evidence that nonsmokers are really not that interested. And for publishing this, as well as agreeing with the e-cigarette usage scientific data found in this study, we applaud the CDC for their ability to read between the lines of fact and fiction.

A Connection Between Vaping and Alcohol Consumption?

alcohol addicted

A recent study is working to vilify e-cigarettes even further than the bans are currently. The study, found in Addictive Behaviors, seeks to link e-cigarette use with what they’re calling “problematic drinking.” From this study, the participating researchers—from Indiana University-Purdue University—have concluded that along with studying the immediate effects e-cigarettes can have on the human body, researchers should also study the “cause and effect” associated with vaping and drinking in the long haul.

There has long been a correlation between smoking tobacco cigarettes and drinking (i.e. the longstanding: “I only smoke when I drink”). This connection led researchers to study whether the same correlation existed with e-cigarettes.

In order to perform the study, researchers surveyed drinkers using the Nicotine and Other Substance Interaction Expectancy Questionnaire (NOSIE), which was modified for this test. In two groups, the participants were asked if they considered using e-cigarettes while they drank alcohol. A majority of participants in both groups (692 and 714 people for each) commented that after drinking they desired an e-cigarette and those who used e-cigarettes desired to drink.

The controversy with this study, however, is that participants were labeled as “two groups of people who drink alcohol,” sounding as though the participants may have already had “problematic drinking” issues prior to using e-cigarettes.

Furthermore, while studying the effects of e-cigarettes is both expected and important going forward, many may have concerns with a study like this as it sounds as if the researchers are explicitly trying to associate vaping with something they perceive as a negative activity. This is because they don’t simply state that people using e-cigarettes also drink, but that they participate in problematic drinking, which can be misconstrued as being an alcoholic.

Vaping is generally considered better for you than smoking; however, the decision to switch shouldn’t be taken lightly. Call to Action: Don’t Let the FDA Ban Vapor Products!

Vapor Products Call to Action!Do you use vapor products? Are you a big fan of vapor products? Do you know that the future of e-cigarettes is on the line? Are you aware that your ability to use them freely may not exist if the FDA’s Tobacco Deeming Regulations stand?

Last week the CASAA, (the Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association) made an urgent Call to Action in efforts to get everyone involved in this industry to make it known to Washington, local senators and congressional representatives that this kind of action would be a major detriment. In the first few days of the announcement, tens of thousands of e-cigarette and vapor product users stormed the White House with calls and emails, pleading for support of a Bill that will change how the FDA regards alternative tobacco products.

If you are just now hearing about this call to action, or the imposed amendment to the FDA’s proposal, the vapor products industry is asking for support of Bill HR 2058, which will work to keep vapor products available to all adults who use them. Otherwise, within the next 2 – 4 years, 99.9% of all electronic cigarette and vapor related products will be off the market, and not available for sale.

Seems entirely unfair, unjust, and simply wrong, right? What would your life be like if you were placed in a position that gave you only the option of switching back to tobacco because you had no other choice? Well, we urge you to speak up! It is absolutely necessary to make your voice heard, and we highly encourage you to call the White House, as well as email your Congressional Representative and Senators to ask for their support in this extremely important effort of Bill HR 2058. The banning of vapor products will come at a devastating cost to everyone in this industry. Denying users of a valid alternative to the dangers of tobacco, while destroying countless businesses, and impeding innovation that has come so far in just a few years are but a few examples; we can do something to avoid this! Let your voice be heard!

E-cigarette activism may seem like a minimal effort, but it is vastly important as it is a newer industry and it is susceptible to attack. For more ways on how to become more involved in protecting your rights as a vaper and to make voice your heard, here are our tips on how to get involved in supporting the vapor industry.

Excise E-Cigarette Tax Hits Washington DC

Crippling E-Cig Excise Tax in DCAs of October 1, 2015 electronic cigarettes are no longer categorized as tobacco products, or subject to sales tax in Washington DC. Sounds great, right? Wrong. The latest in e-cigarette regulations has taken a turn for the worst. The new excise tax now adds a 67% tax on electronic cigarette, e-liquid, and all other vapor-related products, and will be imposed upon the party in possession, or selling the products in actual location in District of Columbia. Should a retailer purchase any such items from a wholesaler or vendor who does not pay the excise tax, the retailer will be responsible for it.

The tax extends to all varieties of products under the category of “vapor products,” including electronic cigarette devices, batteries, atomizers, tanks, cartridges, cartomizers, mouthpieces and all other related accessories, with the exception of chargers which will not be included. The regulation regards all items categorized under the term “vapor product,” and this is in regards to any item that is non-lighting, noncombustible, utilizes a mechanical heating element, battery, electrical circuit, regardless of the shape and/ or size that can be used in a manner to produce a nicotine aerosol from a solution, held within a tank or cartridge, that is intended to be used in conjunction with an electronic cigarette, or any type of related device.

This mighty ruling of a regulation comes as part of a budget proposal, intended to rake in around $400,000 for public spending in DC. For what seems like a relatively small amount of funding, the capitol is willing to attack small businesses, hinder growth, and quite possibly leave many people without jobs, all on the grounds of a regulation created to generate additional income.

How unfortunate it is that our nation’s capitol is going to such lengths to create regulations that do not serve the public, present extremely unfair taxation, and create a complete injustice to those looking for alternatives to tobacco. Previous nationwide e-cig taxes were always a hot topic, however DC has taken it to new levels of extreme. Regulations that serve the purpose to offer standards, safety, and fairness to all parties involved make absolute sense; but to single out one niche market, potentially driving business away from small businesses, and making it harder for consumers to access these items is an absolute injustice. It is our hope that more locales do not follow in the disgraceful footsteps of Washington DC!

Smoking & Your Bod

Health Dangers of TobaccoLet’s talk about your body. Specifically smoking and your body. If you have common sense, you’re most likely aware that smoking is absolutely atrocious for your health. Here’s a look at the many ways tobacco messes with the body, and why it’s a smart idea to stay as far away from the stuff as possible. You know, in case you need just another valid reason.

The Immune System: Smoking is a major cause of stress to the body, and under a constant state of stress, the body will never perform at optimal levels, and will have a harder time recovering. Smoking weakens the immune system, rendering it less effective over time, making it harder to fight off infections and heal wounds. Continuous smoking causes the white blood cells to elevate, as it’s the body’s way of reacting to sickness and/ or injury, and over time, after prolonged periods of high white blood cell counts, the body becomes more prone to stroke, heart attack, and cancer. Interesting that cancer and smoking are so related, isn’t it?

The Ears: Smoking has been linked to hearing loss. Because it reduces the amount of oxygen that reaches the cochlea, the cochlea in turn, can become damaged, leaving one with mild to moderate hearing loss.

The Eyes: Macular degeneration, cataracts, blindness, and affecting your ability to use one’s naturally endowed nightvision have all been linked to smoking.

The Stomach: Love your gut? If “no” was your answer, you definitely should steer clear of the cigs. Tobacco smokers, according to research, have bigger bellies than nonsmokers. They are also more likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes, and being a smoker makes this disease even harder to control.

Sex & Fertility: In women, smoking is known to reduce estrogen production, which is an absolute essential to female health, fertility, and having a healthy sex drive.

In men, smoking makes erectile dysfunction a much a greater risk; less blood flow is not a good thing. Tobacco smoke also holds the potential to damage the genetic material carried in sperm, which can cause infertility, as well as lead to genetic complications in your children.

Were you aware of all the many other ways tobacco smoke can be so harmful? Yup, it’s not just the lungs, heart, and mouth (though those are the big ones) that are susceptible to its ravaging, and all these other areas are pretty important too! If you need a reason to stop smoking, and start vaping, consider tobacco to be your body’s worst enemy!
