Study Reveals E-Cig Vapor is Safe Indoors

Even with electronic cigarettes being on the market, and their popularity expanding by the minute, there are still many people and many advocacy groups who warn that there may be dangers we don’t know about. How do we really know they are safe if there hasn’t been government testing? How do we know that they are not as dangerous as cigarettes are? How do we know if the vapor is okay to breathe in, especially in the second hand sense? While it is perfectly normal and rightful for these precautions to arise, testing is being done, and more and more research is being conducted. If e-cigarettes were inherently dangerous, they would not be allowed to be sold! And if you weigh the options, considering how drastically unhealthy tobacco cigarettes are, electronic cigarettes are a world apart. Just in terms of basics, they contain no tobacco, smoke, and they leave behind no tar; the three worst constituents of conventional cigarettes.

For anyone who second guesses the “harmless” vapor that is produced by electronic cigarettes, a study was just released showing that there is no risk in it. Unlike smoke from cigarettes, which is produced by burning tobacco and the other chemicals contained within the cigarette, the tobacco, and the filter, e-cig vapor is entirely different. When they are smoked indoors they present no dangers to those breathing in the same space.

The study was done at Clarkson University, in Potsdam New York, at the University’s Center for Air Resources Engineering and Science department, and it was published in the journal Inhalation Toxicology. It examined the compounds of several byproducts that are found in tobacco smoke, and compared the vapor of several well known electronic cigarette brands to determine whether the same compounds were found in the vapor. As they are completely different products, and how e-cigarettes work is vastly different from traditional cigarettes, it is kind of strange to compare them back to back. Regardless of that however, from what the study determined, the level of toxic chemicals in e-cig vapor when released into the air is so minute, that they have been declared to present no environmental danger for breathing indoors and do not compromise the air quality.¬†While this was not the first study of this kind, it was the largest, looking at the broadest range of toxins. All have revealed similar findings.

This is pretty awesome news for the electronic cigarette community! What this means is that there is confirmation now on something we have been saying all along! While cigarettes are a major problem, especially when smoked indoors, this is not a similarity shared with electronic cigarettes. While there are groups advocating e-cigarette bans, most notably regarding indoor use, it is no longer a relavent argument.
