E-Cig Drama: Explosions & Misuse

Separating Fact from Fiction: E-Cig ExplosionsE-Cig Explodes Causing Second Degree Burns! 16-year old’s e-cig explodes in his face! Another e-cig explosion!

This latest story, as reported by Yahoo! News, details the mishap that occurred when a vapor device exploded, causing severe second-degree burns on the face of a 16-year-old teen, from Alberta, Canada.

The latest headlines scream foul on the e-cigarette industry. “Those dangerous gadgets that teens are messing with.” “Marketed to children, now their lives are in danger.” “Researchers are uncovering the dark truth that lies ahead for teens that use these explosive devices”… Ah, why is there always such a lack of facts in regards to the e-cigarette/ vapor products industry instead of unbiased evidence-based reality?

However, if you are a thinking, intelligent human, you may be able to read between the lines of the exaggerated content here. No, I’m not saying this child’s (yes, he is a CHILD, a 16-year-old  minor) injuries are exaggerated; we wish Ty Greer the absolute quickest recovery from such a traumatic situation, which was most likely extremely scary and the last thing he expected as he was merrily vaping in his car prior to the incident. However, what he was doing with such a device is purely irresponsible on account of his parents/ guardians, as well as himself for messing with things he had no business messing with.

He was using a device known as a Wotofo Phantom, a device clearly designed for those who have a lot of experience in DIY vape building. Mech mods are not for beginners whatsoever. These devices, as anyone will tell you, as manufacturers will blatantly specify, and as retailers will make very clear to those trying to purchase them, are not for the inexperienced. These devices are very easy to use incorrectly, especially if e-cigarette batteries are not used correctly, or if the wrong type is used, and if chances are taken, explosions can happen. Another aspect to keep in mind is lithium ion battery temperature safety; it has to be a conscious thought of all e-cigarette/ vaporizer/ mech mod users. Ty Greer, unfortunately, learned the hard way.

Like firearms, fireworks, cars, knives, and prescription drugs, when used incorrectly, results can be dangerous and fatal. Blaming a product because a child misused it, is plain old ignorance on the part of the media, Greer’s parents, as well as anyone else who refuses to see that this situation most likely could have been prevented if proper care was taken.

Electronic Cigarettes Banned from Checked Airline Luggage

A new regulation from the U.S. Department of Transportation has recently been implemented, effectively banning e-cigarettes from checked baggage.  According to the recent federal rule, sadly neither passengers nor crew members are allowed to pack electronic cigarettes or other battery operated smoking devices in their checked luggage at the airport.

Individuals are allowed to pack them in carry-on luggage, but they are not permitted to use or recharge the electronic device while on the plane.  (Read our article on traveling with your e-cigarette for more information.)

According to a statement made by Transportation Secretary, Anthony Foxx: “We know from recent incidents that e-cigarettes in checked bags can catch fire during transport.  Fire hazards in flight are particularly dangerous. Banning e-cigarettes from checked bags is a prudent safety measure.”

The DOT states there have been 26 reported incidents since 2009 in which e-cigarettes have been responsible for explosions or fires.  Some of these occurred due to short circuits, but often it was user error.  Several of the devices had been left on and consequently caught fire in the luggage area due to an overheated packed e-cig.

Two of the most recent incidents that were reported included an issue at Boston’s Logan Airport on August 9, 2014 where an electronic cigarette device was placed in a passenger’s checked bag in the cargo hold of the plane and a fire broke out, causing the forced evacuation of the aircraft.  Also, on January 4, 2015 at the Los Angeles International Airport, a late arrived checked bag missed its connecting flight and caught fire when the e-cigarette inside the bag overheated.

As electronic cigarette users, we must all remember to handle our devices with care and use them responsibly.  Fortunately, cases of e-cigarettes catching fire are few and far between, as we discuss more in-depth in this article.

4 E- Cig Exaggerations that Keep People Smoking

You all are probably well aware of the controversy that surrounds electronic cigarettes.  Anything that is relatively new and takes away from the tobacco industry is obviously going to be attacked from all ends.  As a result, there are many myths and exaggerations that float around regarding the e-cig health and safety.

Below are four common vaping embellishments that you may hear from people who are traditional smokers.

1. Electronic cigarettes are a fire hazard.

E-cigs do contain a heating element, but unlike cigarettes, there is no combustion process or open flame. Cigarette users are much more likely to start a fire through user careless.  With an e-cig, as long as you buy products that are high quality and act responsibly with the batteries and e-liquid, you shouldn’t have a problem.

2. Electronic cigarettes contain antifreeze.

This may be one of the biggest e-cig exaggerations floating around.  Let’s hope that any company that is reputable in any way would not put anti-freeze in their products.  Propylene glycol, which is used in the liquid of e-cigs, is often found in medications and various foods.  Ethylene glycol is what is found in anti-freeze.  Big difference!

3. Vaping is more addictive than smoking.

This is simply not true.  Both contain nicotine, but with the e-cig you can reduce your nicotine levels at any time.  The vaping hobby may be more addictive in pleasure and flavor, but not due to nicotine. You can have cartridges ranging from 0 milligrams (mg) of nicotine to 18 mg.  It is completely your choice.

4. Vapor from e-cigs is same as smoke from traditional cigarettes.

Wrong!  Cigarette smoke releases carcinogens into the air with every puff.  When a person vapes, the cloudlike fog they release is actually odorless water vapor.

Don’t listen to the exaggerations, myths and lies out there circulating about electronic cigarettes.  If you have questions, EverSmoke is here to provide answers.  Our vaping products are an excellent alternative to traditional smoking with a variety of e-liquid flavors and starter kits that can help you begin the new journey of vaping.

The Dirt on Diacetyl

The Benefit of Diacetyl-Free E-LiquidOne of the big buzzwords in the e-cig industry at the moment is Diacetyl. As in, diacetyl-free e-liquids are the preferred liquids to be vaping because diacetyl is a pretty sketchy additive.

So, if you’re not in the know, here is some useful info regarding it; what it is, why you may not want it in your liquids, and what it’s known to do! We feel that being an informed vaper is key to making the best decisions, and educating yourself is always to your benefit!

Recently, there was some media hype regarding this substance, and a slew of reports began promulgating all liquids as containing it. Of course, as to be expected with spin, these erroneous reports were shot down, particularly when liquids were tested on a British TV program, where the findings discovered only one of ten brands tested contained the substance. And, just for the record, EverSmoke liquids contain no diacetyl, so vape on on with confidence!

What is it?

Diacetyl is a flavor additive used in a variety of different foods, and it originates as a byproduct of the dairy industry. It is used to impart a buttery, or sweetish flavor. When eaten, it is considered to be generally safe, however, when inhaled into the lungs, it’s a different story altogether!

Why is it Dangerous?

Diacetyl becomes dangerous when it is heated and then inhaled into the lungs, consistently over extended time periods. Diacetyl is known to cause the dangerous lung disease, bronchiolitis obliterans, also known as “popcorn lung,” which inflames the bronchioles, obstructing the airflow, resulting in wheezing and a dry cough.

How to Avoid it:

If you’re interested in vaping with liquids that do not contain this lovely stuff, luckily, you probably won’t have a hard time deducing a brand that is committed to keeping diacetyl out of their liquids. For starters, EverSmoke contains no diacetyl, and we can attest (unbiasedly) to the delicious flavors offered in our cartridges.

Hype and hysteria my serve the purpose of bringing to light issues that of great importance to the public, however, facts are always a necessity. E-cigarette myths are always abundant, so reading between the lines is really important. While diacetyl may be found out there in other brands’ liquids, and even though it’s got some pretty negative connotations attached to it, it can (and should) be avoided. The simple solution? EverSmoke!

Is it Safe to Vape and Drive?

smoking and driving

One of the most dangerous activities you do on a daily basis is getting behind the wheel of a car.  If this were not the case, you wouldn’t cringe whenever your teen pulls out of the driveway for the first time alone.

For teens and adults alike, driving is a huge responsibility and being distracted even for one moment can have devastating consequences.  Because of the real danger of distracted driving, many states have banned the use of electronic devices, such as smart phones and mp3 players, when operating a vehicle.

However, currently, there are no laws stating that an e-cig is one of the electronic devices that is considered banned.  Whether the e-cig is considered a “handheld electronic device” would be up to each individual state.

Of course, that doesn’t mean high ohm vaping in the car is totally safe.  We all know that texting and driving is a dangerous mix, but what about vaping and driving?

Vaping and Driving Safety Tips

Anything you do while driving that doesn’t involve paying attention to the road can be considered a dangerous distraction.  This includes vaping if not done properly.  If you decide to vape while driving, consider the following safety tips below:

  • Before you vape, have the e-juice filled, battery charged and the electronic device ready.  If any of this needs to be done while you are driving, it is necessary to pull over.

North Carolina One Step Closer to Requiring E-Liquid Warning Labels

attention sign

The state of North Carolina legislators are taking the first steps to making warning labels and child-resistant packaging mandatory for e-cigarette liquid. The bipartisan Senate Bill 286 (sponsored by Senators Stan Bingham and Don Davis) passed unanimously through the House Health committee and the Senate by a vote of 48-0. It will now move on to the House for a final vote.

The bill will require all e-liquid sold in North Carolina to be clearly packaged and have a warning label. The law would go into effect on December 1st if the bill passes. Any company or individual in violation of the law could face a misdemeanor.

The child-resistant packaging SB 286 would require is packaging that is “significantly difficult” for children (especially those under 5) to open. In addition, the safety warning required would need to follow N.C. Commission for Public Health guidelines.

Reason for Concern

As e-cigarette usage has become more prevalent, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has noticed an increase in the number of poisoning amongst children (especially those younger than age 5). The major concern with exposure (defined as ingestion, splashed into eyes or onto the skin and inhalation) to e-liquid is the nicotine found within.

Nicotine over-exposure, especially a concentrated liquid version, can lead to nausea, eye irritation and/or vomiting.

In addition to protecting children from being inadvertently exposed to liquid nicotine by requiring child-resistant packaging, this bill would also help to protect vapers from bootleg e-liquid and ensure that they purchase their e-cigarette supplies from reputable sources.

Sen. Bingham feels that not only will the bill fulfil its intended purpose, but it will also bring awareness to being a responsible e-cigarette user. Bingham has stated that he feels “there are too many e-cig and vaporizer users who don’t recognize the potential harm the e-liquid can cause if contacted in those ways.”

Purchasing your e-cigarette components from a reputable company such as EverSmoke.com ensures that you have a high quality product – with the added benefit of a pre-filled cartridge so you won’t have bottles of e-liquid laying around. Be Cautious When Using Your Vapor Cigarette around Oxygen Tanks

Experts are cautioning those who use oxygen tanks that there is a potential for fire when using vapor cigarettes. There are reports of individuals receiving oxygen therapy being injured in fires that could have been started by (or made worse) by the devices.

Although vapor cigarettes are battery operated and have no open flame, experts suggest there is still some risk when the battery-operated devices and oxygen tanks are mixed. This is because, even without an open source of heat, e-cig batteries do heat the device enough to pose a threat if this heat gets too close to the pure oxygen stored inside a pressurized tank.

Oxygen tanks pose a fire hazard because they introduce extra oxygen into their environment – oxygen is a vital part of how fires start and grow. As patients practice oxygen therapy, amounts of oxygen escape the tank and permeate items around the home including furniture, bedding, clothing, etc. Once extra oxygen has entered these items, it will make them more flammable. In addition, the normal air we breathe contains around 21 percent oxygen; however, portable oxygen tanks contain 100 percent oxygen.

Long have those on oxygen therapy been warned of not smoking cigarettes around their oxygen tanks, which makes perfect sense. Given that vapor cigarettes do not burn, some may find these warnings overly cautious; however, some oxygen supply companies suggest that their patients refrain from using electric razors while using their oxygen tank. These companies cite that the battery-powered razors have the potential to cause sparks and the combustible nature of pure oxygen poses a risk.

If electric razors could possibly spark the oxygen flowing from a tank, then the warnings about avoiding the use of vapor cigarettes makes more sense. Moreover, in the end, the combustible nature of pure oxygen (and the results of fires involving oxygen tanks) is not worth the risk of using even an e-cig while doing oxygen therapy.

Using vapor cigarettes around a home oxygen tank is far less dangerous than using a traditional cigarette with a burning end. For those who are just beginning oxygen therapy and must quit smoking due to health concerns, switching to vapor cigarettes can help them immensely. Can E-Cigs Really Explode? – Just How Safe Are They?

Since e-cigs have been on the market, there have been various views on the safety of the product.  Can an e-cigarette catch on fire or blow up in your face?  The majority of the accusations cannot be proven.   However, as with anything electrical, proper care must take place to help ensure safety.

Because the battery is the part that powers the e-cigarette, the utmost care needs to be given to that part of the device.  At Eversmoke, we use a lithium-ion battery which is safer than any other battery type.  Because of the safety of this battery it is used not only in our e-cig products but in laptops, cell phones and various other products.

First and foremost, you need to buy your e-cigarette products from a reputable company such as Eversmoke that believes in only using the safest components available. For example, we have a safety circuit microchip in our products to prevent overcharging and overheating.  This is very important when you are researching and considering what company to use when making your e-cigarette purchase.  Stay away from non-reputable type of companies that may use substandard components.

But as stated above, because these devices are run on batteries, proper care and common sense come into play.  One very important piece of advice is to never leave a battery charging unattended.  Also, a hot car is completely off limits to where you should leave a battery charging.

If the battery looks odd, swollen or feels very hot to the touch, do not use it.  It is vital to make sure it is a properly operating battery before you use it.  Also, if you take out the battery, make certain it is stored properly and has a case that can protect it.

Basically, if you have a good reputable e-cig, it has been manufactured properly and you take care of it, safety should not be an issue.  For more information regarding various safety issues, please check out our article in our knowledge center, and continue browsing blog for more information regarding electronic smoking and e-cigarettes.

Recommendations for Smokeless Cigarettes and Air Travel

The popularity of smokeless cigarettes has reached a point where it is evident that the smoke-free nicotine delivery systems are here to stay. However, it does not mean that the controversies and arguments about the devices have stopped—new arguments are popping up frequently. The most recent controversy involves vaping on airplanes; however, the argument being made may not be the one you assume it is.

When smokeless cigarettes hit the market, there was some concern over whether a cabin full of people would suffer ill health effects from ‘second-hand vape’. The argument now has turned to concerns over fire safety. Last month, there was an incident where a small fire started after a passenger packed his smokeless cigarette in his checked luggage at Logan International Airport in Boston. This has prompted airport officials to ask federal officials to reclassify e-cigs as hazardous.

The Events

Passengers on a JetBlue flight to Buffalo, New York were evacuated from the aircraft when baggage handlers smelled smoke. A smoldering bag was removed from the baggage hold and extinguished. Luckily, the flight hadn’t actually taken off or the events could have been very different. After examining the remnants of the bag, the culprit seems to have been a smokeless cigarette—or more specifically, the device’s lithium-ion battery.

Lithium-ion batteries, which are found in everything from laptops to cell phones, have long been linked to being capable of catching fire. While the Massachusetts Port Authority may blame the smokeless cigarette for the incident, any lithium-ion battery that is activated inside a packed suitcase could easily overheat and catch fire. The incident has led many to suggest that smokeless cigarettes should be banned from airplanes; however, the better course of action would be to insist that e-cig components be disassembled packing in checked luggage.

TSA Guidelines for Flying with Smokeless cigarettes and E-liquid

The TSA doesn’t currently have restrictions on e-liquid, or e-cig products—this includes batteries, cartridges, and charging devices. However, any separate liquids will fall under the 3-1-1 carry-on rule.

While it is highly unlikely you’ll have any difficulties with the TSA concerning your smokeless cigarettes (and components), to be more precautionary, don’t declare them for inspection at the checkpoint. If an issue arises, explain that it’s your smokeless cigarette.

Further recommendations include:

  • Pack your batteries and charger in your laptop case or with your other electronics

Thinking About Generic E-Cig Batteries? Think Again

If you are somewhat familiar with the e-cig industry, perhaps have used the products, maybe dabbled in a few brands, know the difference between the different styles, and generally even just have your feet wet with knowledge about them, you know how they work. You know you will need a battery, an atomizer, and juice to make the experience complete, and no matter what style or configuration you go with, those parts are essentials to how e-cigs work. However, regardless of your personal e-cigarette expertise, are you aware of all the options that lay before you? Including the shady and the fakes?

Right now, there are companies out there selling blanks and generic parts for your electronic cigarettes; batteries in particular. However, when you buy from some random company, claiming their generics will work fine with ours, how do you really know? And will they stand by you should things go wrong?

EverSmoke e-cigs are known for their outstanding quality and great performance, why mess with it? Especially to save a few bucks, settling for some generic e-cig and taking chances with your cartridges and chargers? Save your money, stick with EverSmoke, and just keep your eyes out for some of the great sales and deals we run; which happen pretty often!
