Electric cigarettes are an obviously modern innovation. They encompass everything that is convenient and unique about today’s digital devices. E-cigarettes modernize, streamline and enhance all aspects of smoking and using nicotine for smokers, regardless of what their preference of device is. They have changed the way smokers experience nicotine and harness control over the process. Most smokers who have switched to vaping could not imagine going back to analog cigarettes now after experiencing what they get out of vapor cigarettes. Pretty amazing for products that have been around for just over a decade, internationally!
So here’s a look at the history of the e-cigarette. Their popularity may have only grown in the past five years however they were born of an idea that started over 50 years ago.
In 1963 a man named Herbert Gilbert patented an idea he had for an electronic smoking device. Cigarette smoke was in high demand with a huge portion of the nation’s adults smoking regularly. It was common to smoke in every public setting imaginable including libraries universities workplaces; in fact there are even images of doctors and surgeons smoking in operating rooms! With incredible foresight, Gilbert knew that this rampant cigarette smoking was going to lead to widespread illness and disease. He developed the concept, however he was way before his time because the mass public was not (yet) interested in the alternative devices because they were too busy puffing on their tobacco.
In 1983, it was predicted that in the future cigarette smoking was going to become electronic and smoke was going to be replaced with vapor. This is truly where the term vaping originated.
Electronic cigarettes fell by the wayside until the year 2003 when a pharmacist in China, Han Lik, developed a similar prototype, looking to create a product that would help smokers have an alternative to traditional tobacco use. Lik’s father had recently passed due to a lifetime of smoking that led to lung cancer, and he wanted to turn the tragedy into a positive. With the good fortune of having connections, it was no time at all before his creation was developed into a product and was reaching the Chinese public. The success was immediate, and in just a few short years the popularity of e-cigarettes spread all throughout Asia, Europe, and into the American markets.
Currently, the market is a billion dollar industry upstaging tobacco and expanding rapidly. What began as an idea to offer an alternative to tobacco has succeeded and is becoming the preferred way for smokers to enjoy nicotine.
