The electronic cigarette experience and the throat hit is a very common discussion with vaping, however sometimes e-smokers run into the occasional issue. One of the most common being sore throats.
Sore throats and smoking are quite common. For many users, when switching over to electronic cigarettes, a sore throat is sometimes experienced, and at first thought, one may wonder if it is the e-cigarette causing it. However, this is one of the telltale signs of withdrawal from traditional cigarettes. It often seems like a reaction to the e-cigarette, in actuality it is more likely a reaction to no longer smoking cigarettes.
However, this isn’t to say that your electronic cigarette may never cause a sore throat! Sometimes the problem can lie within the common differences between PG and VG e-liquid. When using electronic cigarette cartridges and liquids that are PG- (propylene glycol) based, the result can be an overly dry mouth and throat, leading to a sore feeling. If you are using this type of product, and have just stopped smoking traditional cigarettes, the effect of both of these combined can be quite uncomfortable!
If using electronic cigarette has caused you to experience a sore throat under these circumstances, there are a few things you can do to remedy it.
First of all, if you suspect the culprit is the PG in your liquid, do yourself a favor and switch to a VG (vegetable glycerin) based product. As a natural, plant-derived substance, it is much more gentle on the system, and adverse reactions are not at all common, which is not the case with PG.
Check you nicotine level, it may be too high. Some smokers automatically go for the highest nicotine level available, and sometimes it’s more than your body can handle. If you are using a very strong cartridge, such as 24mg or 18mg, go down a level and see how it feels.
Drinking a generous amount of water can help sooth your throat, as can consuming beverages that have moisturizing properties to them, such as tea made with honey and lemon.
Above all, if your sore throat is truly due to no longer smoking cigarettes, keep in mind that this reaction should pass. If you are new to vaping, remember that there is a learning curve involved with really getting the hang of these products. Learn as much as you can, and find out what works for you. In a short amount of time, you (as well as your system) will be used to electronic cigarettes!
